Virtual reality for older people: travel, memories and connection
VR gets talked about as a young person's thing. It is not. Some of the most moving reactions we see come from older visitors and from care home groups, and the reasons are worth spelling out.
A window to anywhere
A headset can take someone who cannot travel far to almost anywhere. A beach, a mountain, a city they always meant to visit. For a resident who rarely gets out, that sense of being somewhere else, even for a few minutes, is a genuine change of scene rather than another afternoon in the same chair.
Going back in time
The one that surprises people is memory. Modern VR can show real places in high detail, so someone can revisit the street they grew up on or the town they married in. Watching that land is something else. It opens up conversations and brings back stories that had not come up in years.
Easy to use, easy to enjoy
Older visitors sometimes worry the kit will be fiddly. It is not. The headsets are light, comfortable and simple, with no complicated controls to learn. Our team fits everything and stays with you, so there is nothing to set up and nobody left guessing. Motion sickness is far less of an issue than it used to be, thanks to better screens and smoother tracking.
Good for the mind, not just the eyes
It is not only about looking at nice views. Gentle games and puzzles give the brain something to do, and the shared reaction in a group, the laughing and the pointing, is good for people in a way that is hard to measure but easy to see.
If you run a care home or work with older people and want to bring this to your residents, we offer mobile VR visits and can tailor a session to the group. Get in touch and we will talk it through.
