Navigating the Entertainment Odyssey: From Viral Entertainment to a Thriving New Beginning
In November 2019, we embarked on an exciting journey by introducing Viral Entertainment, a vibrant addition to Corby’s entertainment scene. However, as destiny would have it, a mere four months later, the world underwent a seismic transformation that would forever reshape the landscape for businesses globally. The relentless COVID-19 pandemic descended upon the planet, ushering in a period of unparalleled uncertainty and formidable challenges, including those faced by our beloved Viral Entertainment.
The pandemic’s relentless course forced us to shutter our doors, thrusting us into an arduous battle. Yet, our unwavering determination drove us to endure and persevere, fighting tooth and nail to keep Viral Entertainment afloat for over three and a half years. However, as the pandemic’s grip persisted, it became increasingly evident that the road to recovery would be fraught with formidable obstacles.
The decision to bid farewell to Viral Entertainment and embrace a fresh beginning was one of the most pivotal moments in our journey. While many businesses grappled with the aftershocks of the pandemic, we found ourselves in a unique position. As newcomers to a burgeoning industry, we hadn’t yet established a firm foothold when the world shifted beneath our feet. This placed us under the weight of considerable debt, including the burdensome load of bounce-back loans and rent arrears. In addition, we grappled with the unrelenting obligation to repay business loans, all while navigating the ever-evolving maze of COVID-19 restrictions, from the enigmatic “Rule of 6” to the uncertainties posed by new variants like Omicron.
Despite our business generating revenue, it often felt as though the money vanished into thin air, dedicated primarily to covering bills rather than sustaining our livelihoods. We dedicated ourselves to our work, often laboring tirelessly with 60-70 hour workweeks. Yet, financial difficulties persisted, making it clear that a transformation was imperative. Enter Odyssey VR.
The name “Odyssey” carries profound significance for us, stemming from a source of inspiration we encountered quite unexpectedly—an encounter with an acapella singing group during a cruise holiday in Norway. This group bore the name “Odyssey,” stylized as “ODY-C.” This serendipitous encounter fueled our resolve, motivating us to register the company name and lay the foundation for our brand.
Initially, we contemplated operating as a mobile VR company, delivering captivating experiences wherever our clients desired. However, it didn’t take long for us to recognize the persistent demand for parties and family bookings, a demand that necessitated a fixed location. Fate intervened when we least expected it.
Garry’s passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, cultivated since 2021, led us to a golden opportunity. A local Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school, ACTJJ Corby, was in the process of relocating to a new space, relinquishing their lease. Garry astutely saw the potential of this venue and knew it would seamlessly align with the vision of Odyssey VR. The rent was equitable, positioning our nascent business for growth.
From that moment forward, we embarked on a journey to transform the former Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school into a cutting-edge VR center. It was a labor of love and resolute determination, fueled by the belief that Odyssey VR could craft indelible experiences for our community and beyond.
As we approach the grand opening on September 18th, we reflect on the trials surmounted and the wisdom acquired along the way. “Odyssey” signifies a lengthy and eventful voyage brimming with adventures, and that is precisely what this has been—a journey marked by resilience, rebirth, and unwavering commitment.
